Old Toy Diagram

Yiyi | 2025- | 420×297mm; updating

It began with a simple curiosity: I took apart a toy on my desk and recorded its workings. Beneath its seemingly simple motions and effects, I discovered a design both concise and intricately interlocked. So I set out to reacquaint myself with the toys of childhood long tucked away in memory: the aerodynamics that carried a bamboo dragonfly’s skyward longing; the winding and release of a spring that powered a tin frog’s leap; and the partnership of geometry and light that conjured the kaleidoscope’s visual marvels—endlessly unfolding, dreamlike, and surreal.

These drawings and diagrams hope not only to summon back the pure, intent joy of past play, but also to touch upon the primal vocabulary that makes a toy “come alive”: wind, water, contact, friction, tension and release—forces as vital and poetic as childhood itself.
